“Wait, so you don’t want me to drive you?” Talon’s tone sounds as if she’s slightly hurt.

“No, I’ll do it tonight.”

“But I’m a better driver than you. And where are you even going? I should be there, right?”

“I can drive just fine.”

“But for an event, don’t you need to be, like, ready to flee the scene?”

“This isn’t an event.”“Hold up. It isn’t?”Another chuckle. “Didn’t I just say that?”

“I’m confused. Where are you going?”

Arden moves around the Range Rover and places a hand on Talon’s shoulder. “Are you concerned because you care about the car or about Evelyn? Either, I assure you, is an acceptable answer.”

Talon scrunches her face, then tilts her head. “Probably the Rover more than anything. I mean, it’s a fantastic ride.”

“That’s what I assumed.”

“If you aren’t going to an event, where are you going? Why are you taking her?” Talon stops in her tracks. “Wait a second. Are you taking Evelyn out out?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like, a date. Like, an oh, my God, I fucking knew it kind of date??”

“Talon, keep your voice down.” Arden waves. “Stop. Right now.”

Talon’s goofy grin is almost enough to calm Arden’s quickly escalating nerves. She bounces on her toes a couple of times. “This is so exciting. I mean, also kind of forbidden, right? You aren’t supposed to fall in love with the woman you’re protecting.” She releases an excited squeal. “Except I don’t care. I’m so excited about this.”

“Jesus, please stop. You have got to pull yourself together. This is not a date. It’s simply a woman needing a break and me being the only one who can take her.”

“Meh. I don’t believe that, but whatever.” She shrugs. “And besides, you already know that I have eyes and can see the way you look at her.”

The sigh is involuntary. Arden pulls her sunglasses off, wishing she could take the sigh back for the simple fact that she is giving herself away. “Can we please come to an understanding here?”

“Yes, boss.”

“I, in no way, shape, or form, have feelings for Evelyn Glass. I was hired to protect her. That is all.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Talon, seriously.”

“Okay.” It’s clear by her tone that she is not convinced.

“I’m being serious.”

“So am I.”

“Talon, listen—”

“No, Arden, you listen.” She puffs her chest a bit, stands taller, and lifts her chin. Whatever she’s about to say is taking more courage than normal, and a strange mixture of overwhelming pride and slight irritation weaves within Arden. “I’m not an idiot. I’ve been around the block more than a few times. And I’ve had jobs and bosses and have done, well, some very questionable things. But you have been the best boss I’ve ever had. I’m with you every day, four or five hours a day. Everything about you is different. You’re more approachable and, fuck, maybe even a little bit fun.” Talon runs her left hand through her hair. She plays with her hair when she’s nervous. Arden picked that eccentricity up the second she started talking to her. “I trust you.
